What Is a Compromised Barrier?

Most people with a compromised barrier don't know that's what they have.

A compromised skin barrier typically presents as a cluster of symptoms that look unrelated: unexpected breakouts, sensitivity to products you've used for years, a tightness that moisturizer doesn't resolve, occasional stinging or burning on application. These aren't random. They're signs that the skin's first line of defense isn't functioning.

The stratum corneum is made up of corneocytes, which are flattened, protein-filled keratinocytes, embedded in a lipid matrix. That matrix is what holds everything together and regulates water exchange. When it's damaged, the architecture breaks down. Water escapes faster than it should, and external irritants reach layers they're not supposed to reach.

Common causes include over-exfoliation, harsh surfactants, prolonged use of prescription retinoids without support, environmental exposure, and stress. In many cases, well-intentioned skincare routines are the source of the problem. The skin isn't failing. It's reacting to what's been done to it. That's a meaningful distinction, because it means the situation is correctable.
